Film Analysis 2

'The Quay Brothers' By the Quay Brothers

In this short sequence, you can see that this is not a high quality or expensively made film and the content and mise-en-scene is not well made however as the genre is horror, it adds to the creepy unknowingness of the characters. I reminds me of childhood nightmares and the common fear of you’re toys coming to life and killing humans. The Brothers have chosen to use stop motion or limited shots to create their films and I thought this would be a great way to convey a sense of uncertainty and fear to the viewer, even if the subject is not that threatening. Equally, if the original footage was of a natural scene, this jerky style could make it more sinister and when linked with other elements, such as scenes from other footage, it would look very effective and professional.
I also noticed that they used their own soundtrack over the image. They have used piano music and Amy and I thought this would be much more effective and sinister that using diegetic sound from the scene as it further strips the scene from the obvious expectations of a short film.
The Quay Brothers also used props but more importantly they used a close up shot to emphasise it more. They would have had to do this to keep the viewer aware of the situation and what is happening in the scene as there is no dialogue or spoken sound to describe it to them.

  • Stop motion can make a scene look creepy
  • Dialogue is not necessary to make a film successful
